'I Think It's Just Sick'

June 9, 2004

Someone broke into a Renton feed store and mutilated three rabbits.

RENTON - The first stop for any kid who visits Keppler's feed and pet store
is the rabbits.

"Everyone likes a bunny. You see a bunny you want to smile and you want to
pet it," said Parent Randy Goulet, who's here to help his two daughters pick
out a new pet rabbit.

But, that's exactly why the mutilation of three rabbits here is so
heartbreaking to everyone. Last week managers found the three rabbits, cut,
decapitated and the heads taken.

"I absolutely could not believe what I saw. I was sick," said Store owner
Bernice Ripplinger.

There are dozens of animals here at the store, from fish to birds. No other
animals were touched.

The suspects disturbed nothing and took nothing, except the rabbits. A local
animal activist group, Pasado's Safe Haven, has put up posters nearby
offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest. King County
Investigators say they're working on the case.

The store owners hope the suspects are caught, but they will never begin to
understand why anyone would hurt a gentle pet. "Some kind of a cult, I don't
know. I think it's just sick," said Bernice.

"The sneakiest form of literary subtlety, in a corrupt society, is to speak
the plain truth. The critics will not understand you; the public will not
believe you; your fellow writers will shake their heads." -- Edward Abbey
