CHANDLER -- A former Lincoln County woman was arraigned Monday on an animal
cruelty charge for her alleged failure to provide food and water to her dogs in
Davenport while she and her husband were away in January.

Davenport Police Chief Bill Sides said in an affidavit that when he went to
the couple's home Jan. 27, he found one pit bull dead and tangled up on the
couple's porch, where it had been tied with a red cable and choke chain.

Another dog had disappeared, the affidavit says.

An autopsy performed by Chandler veterinarian Gary W. Stone showed the
probable cause of the pit bull's death as hypothermia, with poor body fat reserves
and dehydration contributing, the affidavit says.

Kamber Dawn Miller, 19, who listed a Cushing address when she posted $5,000
bond in March, could receive as much as a five-year prison term and $5,000 fine
if convicted.

Her husband and co-defendant,

Jeremy Dexter Miller, 23, who now lives in Tulsa, pleaded no contest to the
animal cruelty charge last month and received a five-year deferred sentence,
court records show.

He also was ordered to perform 480 hours of community service in the care of
animals and to contribute $100 to the victims compensation fund, court records
show.

Sides said in his affidavit that when he went to the house Jan. 27, it
appeared that the dead dog had cut his mouth from tearing the siding loose on part
of the front door in an attempt to get into the house.

A self-feeder box on the porch had dust in it, the affidavit said.

Two water bowls had only half an inch of water from melting snow, and one of
them had excrement in it, the affidavit said.
