Jackson County's animal shelter may stop selling animals for research, a
reaction to a torrent of criticism from those who say the practice is

County commissioners Monday heard from several animal-rights supporters
who say dogs and cats suffer and are often used for research
unnecessarily. Jackson is one of eight Michigan counties that sells
animals for research.

"The medical community needs to be forced to admit the majority of the
public does not approve of this," Leoni Township resident Mary Wilson
told commissioners. "This is barbaric. It's obsolete."
