MONROVIA -- Noisy protests by animal-rights activists targeting a local
family and an assault on a security guard have prompted the City Council
to call a special meeting to discuss the creation of an ordinance that
would restrict demonstrations.
The possible ordinance must be a delicate balance between the free speech
that's assured by the First Amendment of the Constitution, and protecting
residents from being "held captive' in their own home, said Mayor Rob
Hammond.
...
Mitchell Lardner, who lives with his family in the historic Upton
Sinclair house in the 400 block of Myrtle Avenue, has been the target of
the protesters. Lardner works in a middle management position for
Sumitomo Corp. of America, a company that is targeted by the activists
because of its alleged link to New Jersey-based Huntingdon Life Sciences,
a company that performs tests on animals.
