NORWEGIAN ABATTOIRS AND ANIMAL TRANSPORTS ARE BREAKING EU REGULATIONS
-------------------------------------------
The welfare of Norwegian animals in slaughterhouses and animal road
transports has been checked and found not be in compliance with EU
regulations.

Norway is not a member of the European Union, but a vast majority of the EU
legislation on animal welfare applies to Norway due to a bilateral treaty
(Agreement on the European Economic Area).

The checks were carried out by an independent control organ ESA (EFTA
Surveillance Authority) which aims at ensuring Norway´s compliance with EU
law in accordance with the EEA treaty.

The report was published in May 2004 and revealed very disturbing facts,
e.g.:
- Stunning and bleeding procedures were not carried out accurately.
- Birds were loaded in wet and dirty containers.
- Lactating animals were not milked.
- Pigs were caught with electric stunning equipment which is designed only
to stun.
- Transport vehicles were loaded with too many animals.
- The Norwegian national control did not ensure acceptable conditions.

The Animal Welfare Alliance (NAWA) made sure that the report was available
to the media. We also reported four slaughterhouses to the police and wrote
to the Minster of Agriculture demanding improvements in national control
systems. The issue received a lot of media attention and was highlighted in
the Parliament by the Socialist Party. NAWA will continue to work for
improvements.

The report may be read (in English): Final report from a mission carried out
by the EFTA Surveillance Authority to Norway
