                  Dear Melotxu Cáceres Acosta,

BILL MAKING HORSE SLAUGHTER ILLEGAL FAILS TO PASS IN ILLINOIS: SUPPORT NEEDED IN ILLINOIS AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO BAN SLAUGHTER OF AMERICAN HORSES

On Friday, May 28, the Illinois House of Representatives voted against an amendment to a bill that would make the slaughter of horses for human consumption illegal in the state of Illinois. Because of this, a slaughterhouse in DeKalb, Illinois will reopen soon. The vote was 60 opposed, 5 abstaining, and 51 in favor of the ban on horse slaughter. The fight to protect horses from slaughter in the State of Illinois and in the United States is not over. Horses need your help.

Illinois residents: Click here to see how your representatives voted. If your state representatives voted YES in favor of the bill, please write them a note thanking them for their support of the bill to prevent the slaughter of horses in Illinois and asking them to continue to support legislation banning the slaughter of horses in Illinois. If your representatives voted NO, please let them know that you disagree and that you want them to support legislation making the slaughter of horses in Illinois illegal.

                  On the National Level:

HR 857, The Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, has been introduced in the United States House of Representatives and its counterpart, S 2352, has been introduced in the United States Senate. The legislation would prohibit the slaughter of horses in the United States and would prohibit the export of American horses for slaughter in other countries. Please click on the links below to determine if your US Senators and Congressmen are co-sponsors of these bills in the House and in the Senate. If your Congressman or Senators are not co-sponsors, please write or fax them a very polite letter asking them to co-sponsor these bills. If they are co-sponsors, please write or fax them thanking them for their support.

Co-sponsors of S 2352 in the United States Senate:

Dr. Pat Haight, Director of the IDA Conquistador Equine Rescue Program said, "The ultimate solution to the cruelty of horse slaughter in the United States will be passage of the Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. Everyday we see the cruelty of the horse slaughter industry and the killer buyers in Arizona. Please help horses by contacting your Congressmen and Senators in support of the House and Senate Bills."
