WICHITA, Kan. - The discovery of mad cow disease in the United States has
sparked a modern-day range war among cattlemen, who are fighting in the
courts, with government regulators and on the Internet.

Caught in the crossfire are American consumers, who are paying some of
the highest beef prices in history.

The long drought, which reduced domestic cattle herds, coupled with the
U.S. ban of cattle imports from Canada since that country's first case of
mad cow disease, has shrunk U.S. beef supplies.

But the U.S. appetite for beef has remained strong, despite steps by the
Agriculture Department that some say threaten to erode public trust in
the nation's food.
