eBay needs to enforce its ban on selling bear products
By SPECIAL TO CITIZEN-TIMESJune 3, 2004 6:00 p.m.
I was appalled recently when several items made from bear parts were posted
on the eBay Web site. Among the items offered for sale were: A set of ashtrays,
made from grizzly bear paws, a black bear head mount, and a cinnamon black
bear full taxidermy mount. In eBay's posted list of "prohibited items" it
states: "Bears and bear products (for example, bear teeth, claws and rugs) may not
be listed on eBay." This statement is found at the following URL:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/ wildlife.html. Obviously, eBay is failing to adhere to
its own rules by permitting the sale of these items. Worse, it seems that
eBay is ignoring the fact that grizzly bears are protected. eBay's failing to
enforce its own policies puts the company at risk of being fined - and
embarrassed - by the U.S. Fish Wildife Service's enforcement division. Many of us who
live in Western North Carolina are interested in the well- being of bears, both
here and elsewhere. Many of us also have used eBay to buy or sell on the
Internet. I am submitting this letter as a "heads-up" to eBay shoppers and bear
aficionados in the area. I, for one, will not be visiting eBay to shop anytime
soon.
