Fort Hood Dog Destined For Coveted Canine Award
The American Kennel Club will present its coveted Heroic Military Working Dog Award Thursday to a dog assigned to Fort Hood’s 89th Military Police Brigade’s 178th Military Police Detachment.
“Frenke” and his handler Sgt. Herman Haynes will attend the black tie presentation ceremony Thursday night at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum in New York City.
Haynes and Frenke have worked together since May 2001.
Frenke is a seven-year-old German shepherd trained to detect explosives and to protect his handler and other soldiers while on patrol.
Haynes and Frenke are currently on duty in Iraq, but traveled to New York City earlier this week to receive the award.
The pair spent eight months in Afghanistan in 2002 on patrol and clearing buildings for explosives.
Frenke and Haynes have also assisted the Secret Service detail assigned to protect President Bush when he’s at his Central Texas ranch.
The pair has been in Iraq since January.
