WEST ORANGE | There didn't used to be resident Canada geese in New
Jersey, fouling parks, ponds and the soles of golf shoes with their
cylindrical green calling cards.
...
But there are now an estimated 90,000 of the non-migrating geese
overpopulating the golf courses and manicured lawns of the Garden State.
And the rising number of these big birds has caused a flap among local
officials, animal rights advocates and state and federal policy-makers
over the most effective and humane methods of dealing with them.
Like New Jerseyans' increasing contact with deer and black bear, the
resident Canada goose problem is yet another consequence of suburban
sprawl. The birds prefer wide open, finely cut grass to rougher natural
terrain, and have prospered on suburban fairways and well-trimmed yards.
