WWF primate investigation project starts in central
province
05/31/2004 -- 12:05(GMT+7)
Quang Nam, May 31 (VNA) - The World Wildlife Fund
(WWF) - Indochina Programme and the Forest Ranger
Department of central Quang Nam province have begun
works on a primate project in the province.
Research will be carried out over 250 days in 30
forests in the province to report on primate
populations and risks threatening primate.
Forests in the western region of the province are
home for a large number of Pygathrix cinerea, which is
a unique species, living only in Viet Nam. It is
estimated that there are about 600 individuals, living
in five provinces in the country's central provinces
and the Central Highlands.
The WWF's Indochina Programme and the provincial
Forest Ranger Department are also carrying out a
project on management of the A Vuong rain forest.
The project, launched earlier this month, will be
carried out in two years in collaboration with
partners of the central Truong Son bio-diversity
preservation programme.
The project aims to study ecological and
socio-economic development with the participation of
the Co Tu ethnic community in the A Vuong rain forest.
Forest and capital will be allocated to the Co Tu
people in order to boost economic, ecological and
social development in the region.
It is expected to serve as a basis for a programme to
allocate 300,000 ha of watershed forests in Quang Nam
province to local organizations before 2010.
