URGENT: Animal Disaster Relief Team needed in Haiti

As you know, Haiti has been hit by a major flooding disaster. At least 2000
people have been killed and 40,000 are homeless.

Quoting from the LA Times:

"The natural disaster has been a crushing blow to a nation already ravaged by
political rebellion, poverty and illness. It has also laid bare the
powerlessness of an impoverished interim government that has neither an army
nor a functioning police force to come to the rescue."

Several disaster relief teams have already arrived from Chile, Brazil, Canada,
the United States, France and many other countries, providing much-needed aid
to the human victims of the deadly storm.

Sadly, thousands of animals that are also suffering as a result of the disaster are being over-looked. This includes horses, cows, goats, pigs, dogs and donkeys.

What is needed is for an animal welfare organization to show up in Haiti
immediately to set up a command post and deal with this emergency.

We have been able to identify a highly qualified veterinarian who is available
for hire. He is willing to close his clinic temporarily to get involved in the
disaster relief effort. But he can't do it without assistance.

If you, or an organization that you know of, is able and willing to take this
urgent issue on, please get in touch with Katia Jean Pierre:

Of all the islands in the Caribbean, Haiti is by far the most critical as far
as animal welfare is concerned. There are no NGOs here working on animal
protection. Animal welfare is simply a non-concept here. In consequence, the
degree of animal suffering in Haiti is enormous. At no time has this been more
evident than now, and there doesn't seem to be any relief in sight.
