AR-News: (AU) Circus elephant 'afraid of removal'

A 47-YEAR-old elephant at the centre of an animal cruelty case was
distressed because she feared being taken away from the circus, a Sydney
court was told today.

Arna, an Asiatic elephant owned by Stardust Circus, was shown trumpeting
and swaying violently in a video tape made after she was separated from
three visiting circus elephants at Gosford, on the NSW central coast, in
December 2000.

Animal Liberation NSW have accused Stardust Circus of animal cruelty in
the first case of its kind before the NSW Local Court.

The three elephants were the first Arna had seen since her companion
Bambi died four years earlier.
