Utah student takes message to the streets of Portland
Portland-University of Utah student, Jeremy Beckham, experienced first-hand how difficult it is to get information about medical experiments at public institutions and has decided to help others in their efforts to do the same. Outraged by a system that cloaks itself in secrecy, Jeremy soon found getting help is difficult if not impossible.
Jeremy has taken his message on the road--in fact, across the US this summer, to educate the public about the issue, the problems, and why we should care. His first stop was at the University of Washington and now, Jeremy has positioned himself outside the Oregon National Primate Center located at 505 NW 185th in Beaverton until June 3rd. Jeremy is handing out literature about the experiments, the cruelty and the waste of tax dollars involved. He begins at daybreak and ends at dark each day.
After learning about these cruel tax-funded experiments, and the intelligence level of primates and their ability to suffer, Jeremy wrote, “Why should we hold ourselves to lower ethical standards than non-human primates hold themselves to? If simians can demonstrate mental capabilities that parallel human children, why should they be treated so incredibly differently? Funded by public monies, most taxpayers don’t even realize these places exist."
Jeremy will travel to 8 cities this summer attempting to educate local citizens about laboratories in their town. His Tour will take him next to Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Georgia and beyond. His itinerary and a more in-depth explanation why Jeremy tours is available at http://primatefreedom.com/diarywhytour.html
Jeremy is also preparing for next year’s 2005 Primate Freedom Tour which has many more stops planned and more participants traveling across the US.
A daily update of Jeremy’s diary is available at http://primatefreedom.com/diary.html
Individual life stories of nonhuman primates can be found at http://primatefreedom.com , the home site of The Primate Freedom Project.
