SUAMICO — The NEW Zoo announced the arrival of two cotton-top tamarins.
Adria, a 12-year-old female; and Calloway, a 16-year-old male, arrived from
the Dallas World Aquarium on Tuesday. The lively pair already is on exhibit and
can be viewed by visitors at the Riley Building in the zoo.
Cotton-top tamarins are considered endangered with only 2,000 to 3,000
remaining in the wild. Tamarins live in treetops of tropical rainforests in the
northwest region of Colombia in South American.
They are among the smallest of the New World monkeys, weighing in at only 1
to 1½ pounds with a body length of about 8 inches.
Cotton-top tamarins are the only primates that spontaneously develop colon
cancer in captivity. Therefore, they are important models in the biomedical
community for cancer research.

"The day may come when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those
rights which never could have been withholden from them but by the hand of
tyranny. - Jeremy Bentham 1748 - 1832
The question is not can they REASON, nor can they TALK, but can they SUFFER?"
