WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration has entered the fray concerning
federal cockfighting laws, telling Congress it favors legislation that
would increase penalties for the interstate transport of fighting
chickens.
The bill would change violations in a 2-year-old federal law barring the
interstate transport of fighting birds from a misdemeanor to a felony. It
also would make illegal the interstate or foreign sale, purchase,
transport or delivery of knives, gaffs or other sharp instruments to be
attached to fighting chickens.
A felony conviction could send violators to prison for two years.
Louisiana and New Mexico are the only states that allow cockfighting.
