In an historic announcement made earlier this week, the ASPCA has made a $5 million commitment—that’s one million per year for five years—to support the Mayor’s Alliance for New York City’s Animals, Inc., a public-private partnership that brings together more than 60 nonprofit animal-care groups. “Every day in New York City, as many as 200 lost, sick, injured and abandoned animals are taken to our city’s shelters,” said ASPCA chairman of the board and CEO, Hoyle C. Jones. “By the end of the week, about two-thirds of them have been put to death, simply because there are not enough homes. The ASPCA is committed to reducing euthanasia and working with the City of New York to reach the Mayor’s Alliance goal to make New York City ‘no kill.’”
“This unprecedented financial commitment from the ASPCA will significantly improve animal welfare in our city,” said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “It will enable the Alliance to attract additional private investment from foundations and individual donors to improve the private adoption and spay/neuter infrastructure that supports our public facilities. Leveraging private resources will help us reach our goal of having no adoptable cat or dog euthanized because it does not have a home.”
The announcement was made this past Sunday at an adoptions event in Central Park. On hand to lend their support were actors/animal advocates Mary Tyler Moore and Sopranos star Drea de Matteo. For more on the ASPCA’s commitment to the Mayor’s Alliance, please visit ASPCA online.
