COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A man accused of hitting a dog in the head with a pipe faced a judge Tuesday.

Randall Schutt, 41, was arraigned on charges of animal cruelty for allegedly beating his girlfriend's dog, Gizmo, in April.

Schutt showed up to court without a lawyer and pleaded no contest to the charges.

The judge told Schutt to return to court in a week with a lawyer since he faces jail time.

The prosecutor could ask the judge to send Schutt to anger management class, pay restitution for the hospital bills or even sentence him to jail time.

Gizmo's owner, Kim O'Dell, said the dog was beaten because he didn't go outside.

Gizmo recovered enough from his injuries to be able to return home late last month. The 6-year-old dog was hospitalized with head trauma, a fractured tooth and a cut tongue.

O'Dell said her now former boyfriend, Schutt, admitted to hitting the dog on the head with a steel pipe.

Since NewsChannel 4 first reported the story, enough money was donated to cover Gizmo's medical costs. Gizmo is even receiving free dog massages.

O'Dell said she moved out of the house and is staying away from Schutt.
