The Baton Rouge Advocate:

Senate OKs bill to ban hog-dog fight

Capitol news bureau
By a vote of 33-0, the Senate approved a House-passed
bill Wednesday that would outlaw organized fights
between dogs and hogs.
Sen. Joel Chaisson II, D-Destrehan, said his committee
was shown a video of a recent fight between dogs and
wild hogs that could be described only as gruesome.

"It was a pit bull attacking a hog that had its tusks
removed, and the dog mutilated that hog," Chaisson
told his fellow senators.

House Bill 1244 by Rep. Warren Triche, D-Thibodaux,
would ban organized fights between dogs and hogs in
which any of the animals could be expected to be
injured, maimed, mutilated or killed.

Violators could be fined up to $1,000 and jailed for
up to six months.

HB1244 would exclude competitions in which the dogs
show off their skills at hunting wild hogs, such as
Uncle Earl's Hog-Dog trials near Winnfield.

Sen. Cleo Fields, D-Baton Rouge, questioned whether
the bill went far enough.

"I don't think I have a hog-dog problem in Baton
Rouge, but I think that fighting dogs and hogs should
be outlawed altogether," Fields said.

The bill passed without a dissenting vote.

Because the Senate made some minor changes, HB1244
must go back to the House for consideration.
