Group wants Blanco to speak against cockfighting

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The Humane Society of the United
States has called on Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco to
speak out against legalized cockfighting, saying the
issue is important to economic development in the
state.

“Louisiana’s sanctioning of the practice is both an
embarrassment and an impediment to your efforts to
send a signal that the state is an inviting place to
settle,” Wayne Pacelle, an executive of the group,
wrote in a letter dated May 14 and released Monday.

Blanco, who has not yet taken a position on the issue,
was out of the state visiting a new grandchild and was
not available for comment, her press office said.

Since taking office in January, Blanco has frequently
talked about the need to project a new image for the
state, which has suffered from longstanding publicity
over allegations of corrupt politicians and poor
education.

Louisiana and New Mexico are the only states that
allow cockfighting. The practice is specifically
exempted from the state’s animal cruelty laws, which
state that fowl shall not be defined as animals.
