Humane Society asks Louisiana governor to speak
against cockfighting 
(Baton Rouge-AP) -- The Humane Society of the United
States wants Governor Kathleen Blanco to speak out
against legalized cockfighting. 
Humane society official Wayne Pacell says that legal
cockfighting hurts efforts to bring new business to
the state, because it makes Louisiana a less inviting
place to settle. 
His letter -- dated May 14th -- was released today
(Monday). Blanco has not yet taken a position on the
issue. 
Her office says she is out of the state visiting a new
grandchild and is not available for comment. Louisiana
and New Mexico are the only states that allow
cockfighting. 
The practice is specifically exempted from the state's
animal cruelty laws, which state that fowl shall not
be defined as animals.
