The pooch that saved its battered owner from a would-be rapist in Central
Park is going to be honored by a Long Island animal shelter, officials said
yesterday. The North Shore Animal League of Port Washington wants to present The
Elizabeth Lewyt Award to Cookie, the 60-pound mutt who fought off an attacker
Wednesday."We like to spotlight mix-breed dogs because they are overlooked," said
spokeswoman Marilyn Di Toro.In the past four years, the award - in honor of
the former founder - has been given to Iraqi war dogs and the search-and-rescue
dogs who worked at Ground Zero.Meanwhile, police released a sketch yesterday
of the thug who grabbed the Manhattan woman from behind about 9 a.m. as she
was walking her dog in a wooded area near E. 102nd St. and the East Drive. The
thug threw the 30-year-old victim to the ground and punched her before exposing
himself. When he tried to rip off her pants, the mutt chomped on his face and
thigh, scaring off the bloodied suspect, cops said.Anyone with information
should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.Austin Fenner and Tony Sclafani
