CHAPEL HILL -- For the second time in three years, an undercover operative
for a national animal-rights group has infiltrated a UNC research facility.
And as a result, the organization -- People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals -- is once again criticizing the way UNC treats its laboratory
animals.
The university, which says it made sweeping regulatory and policy changes
after the first round of criticism, is now defending its animal research
program.
At a Wednesday press conference, PETA officials presented video and
photographic evidence they said illustrated numerous violations of federal
guidelines, and called on the government to cut off grant funding to the
university.
Meanwhile, UNC officials scurried to demonstrate the improvements they've
made since the first round of criticism, which came in 2002. They first
heard of PETA's new accusations Tuesday.
