UPDATE: Duplin County Gassing Called Off

Thank you to all who wrote to Duplin County, North Carolina, officials to urge the implementation of a permanent ban on the use of the two dark, filthy, blood-stained cement-and-wooden boxes to kill the county's unwanted dogs and cats. Recent news coverage had revealed that animals were enduring hellish living and dying conditions at the Duplin County animal control facility. One dog warden told WECT-TV 6 that "25 dogs were killed in the pound's gas chamber-all at once" (emphasis added) before TV crews arrived on scene, and an eyewitness told PETA that she had observed 18 cats' being crammed into a wooden gas box and killed together. Shortly after our alert went out, a Duplin County official called to assure us that the gas chambers would no longer be used and that the county is actively seeking humane solutions. PETA's Domestic Animal Issues & Abuse Department will continue to work with Duplin County officials to ensure humane treatment and care for all the county's lost, stray, and abandoned animals.
