MICHIGAN CITY -- A LaPorte County woman claims sexual abuse as a child
left her unable to love another human. So she turned to animals, many of
which died and suffered while stockpiled on her property.

Kathy Shotsberger, 45, also said she couldn't say no to the dozens of
stray dogs and cats facing the likelihood of being put to sleep had she
not accepted them into her home.

"They loved me even when nobody else would. They gave me the love I needed
back," she said.

Her comments were made during sentencing arguments after pleading guilty
April 12 to seven counts of Class B misdemeanor animal neglect.
