Defendant thought charges were for cats, not dogs

MICHIGAN CITY -- A LaPorte County woman claims sexual abuse as a child left 
her unable to love another human. So she turned to animals, many of which died 
and suffered while stockpiled on her property.
Kathy Shotsberger, 45, also said she couldn't say no to the dozens of stray 
dogs and cats facing the likelihood of being put to sleep had she not accepted 
them into her home.
"They loved me even when nobody else would. They gave me the love I needed 
back," she said.
Her comments were made during sentencing arguments after pleading guilty 
April 12 to seven counts of Class B misdemeanor animal neglect.
Combined, all of the charges could bring her a maximum three and a half year 
prison sentence
