Defendant thought charges were for cats, not dogs

MICHIGAN CITY -- A LaPorte County woman claims sexual abuse as a child left
her unable to love another human. So she turned to animals, many of which died
and suffered while stockpiled on her property.
Kathy Shotsberger, 45, also said she couldn't say no to the dozens of stray
dogs and cats facing the likelihood of being put to sleep had she not accepted
them into her home.
"They loved me even when nobody else would. They gave me the love I needed
back," she said.
Her comments were made during sentencing arguments after pleading guilty
April 12 to seven counts of Class B misdemeanor animal neglect.
Combined, all of the charges could bring her a maximum three and a half year
prison sentence

"The day may come when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those
rights which never could have been withholden from them but by the hand of
tyranny. The question is not can they REASON, nor can they TALK, but can they
SUFFER?"
Jeremy Bentham 1748 - 1832
