CLAN DES LOUPS D’AMÉRIQUE DU NORD
Nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting wolves

PRESS RELEASE

Quebec City, May 12, 2004 - This morning at the office of the minister for
wildlife and parks, Clan des Loups d'Amérique du Nord (CLAN) submitted the
results of its campaign to increase the protection of wolves in Quebec.

Over 12,300 people from Quebec, the rest of Canada, the United States, and
Europe signed CLAN’s petition to draw attention to the government’s inaction

regarding the issue.

Signers firmly denounce the aberrations of the current system, namely :

- That trapping remains the leading cause of wolf mortality: 350 to 550
wolves are still killed annually in Quebec.

- That the trapping of 19 animal species, including wolves, is allowed on
1,490,444 km2 in Quebec, or over 98% of the province’s total area.

- That trapping has been allowed on wildlife reserves since 1984. On this
public land, 343 trappers—including many government workers employed by
Société de la Faune et des Parcs hold “lifelong” privileges of all sorts.
