[opinion from Townsville Bulletin]

SIX soldiers who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges yesterday are
finding their punishment extends well beyond what was meted out to them in
the Townsville Magistrates Court yesterday.

Apart from handing down a $2000 fine to each of them, the magistrate
sought and was given an undertaking that the six men would work
voluntarily for 100 hours each at the RSPCA.

But they are being denied this penance -- and the circumstances add to
their shame.

The RSPCA does not want them anywhere near its refuge.

With staff and volunteers naturally sensitive about the way animals should
be treated and the possibility they would be uncomfortable with having
these men work alongside them, RSPCA administrators have rejected the
court's attempt to have the six work in an environment where animals'
lives are valued.
