Sniffer dog given military funeral

THE Israeli army held a full military funeral today for a different kind of soldier killed in battle - a sniffer dog.

Toska - a three-year-old female Malinois, a type of Belgian shepherd - was killed during a shelling barrage on the Lebanese border on Friday. 

The violence also claimed the life of one Israeli soldier and wounded eight others, including Toska's handler. 

Toska was part of the American-Israeli program Pups for Peace, which has 90 dogs serving with Israeli security officials to help detect explosives on Israel's borders and to identify bombers targeting city buses. 

Program chairman Menachem Feder said: "Toska was one of the first dogs that Pups for Peace trained and donated.

"She was a pioneer in every way." 

Most donations for the program, which spends about $US10,000 ($13,880) to train each dog, came from American Jews in California, he said. 

Toska was with soldiers near the Lebanese border when Hizbollah guerrillas began shelling them, the army said. She was severely wounded in the attack. 

She ran around hysterically, preventing soldiers from evacuating her on a helicopter with wounded soldiers, the Yediot Ahronot newspaper reported today. 

The unit's medic, advised by a veterinarian over the phone, tried to stabilise the dog. She was later taken to a clinic, where she died in an emergency operation. 

Toska was buried in a military funeral at a dog cemetery at an army base today.
