Douglas Starr's chronicle of animal research -- and the deaths of six dogs at Tufts University -- triggered a passionate response.
In the Name of Science
Treating a broken bone, human or animal, is surely one of the oldest and simplest applications of clinical medicine ("A Dog's Life," April 18 Accordingly, it strains credibility to suggest, as the dean of the Tufts veterinary school has, that the six dogs were sacrificed for the benefit of other animals. More plausibly, they were killed so that the school and the patent-holder researchers could profit financially from adding one more device to an already crowded market of expensive and unnecessarily complicated treatments.
ETHAN EDDY, Jamaica Plain

Proverbs 12:10 says, "A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel." We must act responsibly and humanely.
NIKI BEHRIKIS SHANAHAN, Tyngsborough

To the extent that pound dogs are replaced by rodents, there is no overall reduction in suffering. But if they are replaced by non-animal research, the animal-welfare laws have a wonderful effect.
DINDA EVANS, Kyungsang-buk, South Korea

Tufts's response was to circle the wagons against four student whistle-blowers, the media, the public, and, of course, the animals. Author Douglas Starr states, "Tufts had always settled its problems within the family." Is this a university or the Mafia? Dean Philip C. Kosch, instead of taking responsibility for the consequences of Tufts's actions, blamed the students when a benefactor acted with conscience and withheld her major donation.
No species deserves to be exploited for the supposed (in the case of animal experimentation) or real benefit of another.
SUSAN GORDON, Representative, New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance, Englishtown, New Jersey
