The Pastoralists and Graziers Association has welcomed a recent vote by the
country's veterinarians on live animal shipments, saying it is an endorsement
of the export trade.
Ninety per cent of vets at an annual conference in Canberra voted against a
motion to call for a ban on live animal shipments from Australia.
However, they have vowed to ensure that the trade is properly regulated with
a mandatory code of practice.
PGA president, Barry Court, says pastoralists in the Kimberley and Pilbara
export cattle mainly into Asia.
He says the death rate from the northern ports is virtually zero.
"0.001 of a per cent cattle die on the ships out of the Kimberley," he said.
''We don't want to be affected by problems in the southern areas of Victoria
which are a different proposition for cattle and sheep altogether so we see a
turnaround in the whole situation and the decision by the Veterinary
Association is certainly one in the right direction for us."

"The day may come when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those
rights which never could have been withholden from them but by the hand of
tyranny. The question is not can they REASON, nor can they TALK, but can they
SUFFER?"
Jeremy Bentham 1748 - 1832
