THE SAGINAW NEWS
A Saginaw County official says it's time residents did their part to nip the
cat problem.
"People feed these cats to keep them around," said Mark Wachner, Animal Care
Center director. "They keep them just healthy enough to breed."
Some Saginaw neighborhoods are overrun with wild cats, and they're causing a
nuisance, Wachner said.
"They get caught in the fanbelts of people's cars, they're a traffic hazard,
they prey on birds and, let's face it, if they're using the neighbor's sandbox
as a litter box, the neighbor is going to get upset," he said.
"There are also people out there who hate cats. These animals are bearing the
brunt of some cruel people. The life of a street cat is very difficult."
The life expectancy for a street cat is two years, compared with 15 for a
pet, he said.

"The day may come when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those
rights which never could have been withholden from them but by the hand of
tyranny. The question is not can they REASON, nor can they TALK, but can they
SUFFER?"
