The San Francisco Zoo's two remaining elephants are headed to greener
pastures, but how big those pastures will be and how soon they will get
there is still up in the air.
Facing mounting public and political pressure following the deaths of two
elephant in as many months, the San Francisco Zoological Society announced
at its public meeting Wednesday that they had committed to transferring
Lulu and Tinkerbelle out of The City. The society also promised to
reevaluate its entire elephant program.
But in a contentious Thursday hearing called by Supervisor Matt Gonzalez,
members of the Board of Supervisors' City Services Committee grilled zoo
officials on how quickly they could move the elephants and where their
final destination would be.
