Man to be tried in death of dog during family fight

By Art Campos -- Bee Staff Writer - (Published May 7, 2004)

A Rocklin man has been ordered to stand trial for allegedly killing a
small dog during a family argument.

At a preliminary hearing Wednesday, two police officers testified that
the 34-year-old man's wife and children told them the defendant had been
drinking the night of Dec. 28 and was angry because the wife went to
Thunder Valley Casino and left two kids at a friend's home.

When she returned, an argument broke out, and the dog began barking, the
officers said. The man picked up the dog, threw it to the floor and then
against a wall, the officers said.

The man, whose name is being withheld by The Bee to protect his family's
privacy, also tried to prevent his wife and children from leaving by
threatening their lives, the officers testified.

Visiting Placer Superior Court Judge Richard W. Kessel ordered the man
to stand trial on 10 charges, including a felony count of killing the
dog and various counts of threats, battery, child endangerment and false
imprisonment.

The defendant, held at Placer County jail on $150,000 bail, pleaded not
guilty.
