A mouse for vivisection costs 14 Euro and a rat up to 29 says the LAV
(anti-vivisection movement) in its dossier on the Italian situation presented in
Parliament today. In the report there’s also a map of regions which the
association defines as ‘most cruel’, i.e. where there is the highest number of
specialized centres authorized for animal experiments and specific breeding. The
chart begins with Lombardy, registering 22 percent of all experiment labs in Italy
and 50 percent of all breeding sites. Out of 41 authorized centres, involving
cats, dogs, primates and even species at risk of extinction, where often no
anaesthetic is used, 49 percent are for testing drugs. Hundreds of monkeys are
used for the development cancer products, also in Lombardy universities.

"The day may come when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those
rights which never could have been withholden from them but by the hand of
tyranny. The question is not can they REASON, nor can they TALK, but can they
SUFFER?"
Jeremy Bentham 1748 - 1832
