FLORIDA CITY BANS FIREWORKS AT GREYHOUND TRACK
After receiving about 100 letters from concerned animal advocates, the city council of Bonita Springs, FL, last week decided to cancel its annual Independence Day fireworks planned for the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound track. "Holding a major fireworks display in close proximity to hundreds of dogs is a recipe for disaster," stated Carey Theil of GREY2K USA, a Massachusetts-based group that works to protect greyhounds nationwide. With their sensitive ears, canines especially can be frightened by the sounds of fireworks, and many have injured themselves in their frantic attempts to escape the loud noises.
Please join us in thanking the city council for its benevolent decision, ASPCA News Alert readers. Letters of appreciation can be sent to Mayor Jay Arend, City of Bonita Springs, PO Box 367029, Bonita Springs, FL 34136; jay.arend at cityofbonitasprings.org.
