UPDATE: Convicted Dog Rapist to Go Before Judge Again

Your urgent attention is requested.

In October 2002, PETA became aware of Hot Springs resident Derek Dunaway, who had apparently bragged online of raping animals, claiming that he’d worked for or attempted to work for local animal shelters and veterinary hospitals in order to gain access to victims. PETA reported Dunaway to local officials who investigated the suspect and on September 17 of that year, charged him with one count of sodomy for his admitted attacks on his dogs. According to news reports, the examining veterinarian found that the animals were “bleeding severely from the colon.” Dunaway was convicted, and his one-year sentence was suspended—meaning that he would not have to spend a single day in jail—under the condition that he continue his counseling and stay away from animals.

In November 2003, Hot Springs Animal Services officers, responding to reports that a dog was screaming at Dunaway’s residence, found a dog in the abuser’s home who had died from an unknown cause. Sources tell us that a necropsy was performed and that “trauma could not be ruled out.” Further, Dunaway also later surrendered a female dog who was in heat to the Garland Humane Society. A veterinary examination reportedly determined that sperm was present in the animal’s vaginal cavity. Officials are awaiting lab results that will determine whether the sample is of human origin.

Dunaway was initially scheduled to answer to charges of violating the sentencing provision that prohibited him from owning or harboring animals on April 1, however the court date has been postponed. He will then appear before either Judge Ralph Ohm or Judge Marcia Hearnsberger—the presiding judge will be determined shortly before the hearing. Again, he faces one year in prison.

Please let the prospective judges hear from you. Politely remind them that repeat crimes among animal abusers are the rule rather than the exception and that this is especially true among so-called “zoophiles.” Ask that they give Derek Dunaway the maximum possible sentence.

It is imperative that all correspondence be dignified and polite or our campaign will suffer.
