NEW ORLEANS -- On Wednesday, officers with the city's animal shelter
confiscated a dog that a staff veterinarian said was the worst case of animal abuse
she had seen in her 15 of service.
The 44-pound pit bull was severely emaciated and covered with scars and
puncture wounds. It was seized, along with three other dogs, from the home of
Dwayne Pettit, at 1818 Marais St.
Pettit faces four counts of animal cruelty. He also was arrested on an
outstanding warrant unrelated to animal cruelty.
"There are no words capable of describing this atrocity, but I will try,"
said veterinarian Dr. Jean McCall.
In her report, McCall said the dog's wounds contained pus and maggots. Holes
in the animal's head were so deep that the skull was visible. The dog's collar
had grown deeply into the neck and deep, infected holes were found in the
hard palate and corner of his mouth, neck, and behind his ear. The dog also was
positive for heartworms, whipworms and hookworms.
Before being humanely euthanized Tuesday, the dog wagged its tail as the
staff stroked and talked to him, according to Laura Maloney, spokeswoman for the
Louisiana Society for Prevention of Cruelty to animals.
Meanwhile, in another case in which hundreds of abused animals were seized
from the property of a Lacombe doctor, 17 dogs remain available for adoption.
Call the St. Tammany Parish shelter, at (985) 809-0183, for more information.

"The day may come when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those
rights which never could have been withholden from them but by the hand of
tyranny. The question is not can they REASON, nor can they TALK, but can they
SUFFER?"
