ABC ONline News
Wednesday, May 5, 2004.
Environmental group the Wildlife Protection Association says kangaroos face
extinction if hunting continues.
Kangaroo meat processors say the populations are down dramatically in South
Australia and New South Wales, with the drought taking a heavy toll.
Association president Pat O'Brien says it is clear evidence that culling must
stop to allow kangaroo numbers to recover.
"We've been saying for the last five years now the red kangaroo particularly
is in serious trouble and it should be declared endangered," he said.
"I believe we'll lose the reds in the next 10 years and I believe we may not
lose the greys completely but what we will finish up with is some small family
clans or family groups of grey kangaroos, genetically impoverished."

"The day may come when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those
rights which never could have been withholden from them but by the hand of
tyranny. The question is not can they REASON, nor can they TALK, but can they
SUFFER?"
Jeremy Bentham 1748 - 1832
