AR-News: LA City of Covington Comes Out Against Cockfighting

COCKFIGHTING MAD: Calling cockfighting a "horrible,
abominable gambling sport," Covington City Council
Vice President Pat Clanton got the council last week
to take a general stand against the sport. 

Louisiana is one of only three states where
cockfighting is legal, and Clanton asked the council
to approve a resolution supporting a bill in the
Legislature by state Rep. Karen Carter, D-New Orleans,
to outlaw the sport and make it a felony to promote or
conduct an organized cockfight. 

Other provisions in the bill would outlaw the
possession and breeding of a fighting bird or
cockfighting equipment, attendance at a cockfight and
the transportation of fighting roosters across parish
lines. 

Councilman Lee Alexius said he also supports a ban on
the sport, but added that it might be better for the
council to take a general stand against cockfighting
instead of backing a specific bill in the Legislature.


Clanton agreed to amendments that changed her
resolution to a city stand against cockfighting. The
resolution then was approved.
