OMAHA, Neb. -- Police want to find a man accused of brutally killing a dog.
They intend to prosecute him under a new city ordinance. <IMG SRC="http://images.ibsys.com/2004/0405/2975169.jpg" WIDTH="200" HEIGHT="200" BORDER="0" DATASIZE="11048">
Jariel Pittman (pictured, left) is accused of throwing a puppy against a wall
and kicking it to death. Police said he was threatening his wife by killing
the dog. He showed up at his estranged wife's home Feb. 28 and refused to
leave, even though she asked him repeatedly to go.
"He said, 'If you don't let me stay, then I'm going to kill the puppy,'" said
Officer Cathy Martinec, with Omaha police. "He then kicked the 10-week-old
puppy up against the couch. That wasn't good enough. He picked the puppy up,
threw it against a wall."
Pittman is now a wanted man on a felony animal abuse charge. A new law was
created in Omaha to provide felony charges against animal abusers. The Humane
Society said the law is necessary to protect people because many animal abusers
eventually turn to domestic violence.
