Students' Livestock Ready for Show Ring
By PHILIP FEROLITO
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
TOPPENISH After spending months raising and grooming their animals, high
school students will get a chance to show them off starting Sunday in the
Toppenish Livestock Show.
The show, in its 55th year, will be held at the rodeo grounds on Division
Street. Students will be putting up displays today and animal weigh-ins
begin at 9 a.m. Sunday. The event is open to the public and animals will be
on display Sunday through Tuesday.
Judging of swine, steer and lamb begins at 12:30 p.m. Monday.
About 570 animals from 48 clubs and chapters have been entered, said Peggy
Cuillier, event secretary-treasurer.
"That's pretty close to what we had last year," she said.
Grand champions will be named Tuesday starting at 8 a.m., and students will
start showing their animals at 10:30 a.m., when they will be judged on how
they handle their animals.
Animal auctions begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday and will continue until about 5
p.m., Cuillier said.
Participating students will take part in some extra-curricular activities as
well. A dance will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday at Toppenish High
School, and a 7 p.m. roller skating party will be held at Skateland in
Yakima on Tuesday.
"It's a big part of these kids' year to have the four days at the livestock
show," Cuillier said.
Out of the 48 chapters and clubs, White Swan is the only group not bringing
animals. After several youngsters allegedly broke into the school's barns
and tortured and abused some 35 pigs and two of them died White Swan
decided last week to pull its 27 entries from the show.
Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to
embrace all living creatures. Albert Einstein
