The details have yet to be worked out and the papers signed. But Paul
Waldau and his wife have cleared perhaps the highest hurdle - custody - in
their impending divorce.

The arrangement could pass for a case study from his own animal-law class
at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, the kind of course that
is in growing demand because of an emerging trend. Increasingly, less
amicable couples are turning to the courts to settle custody and
visitation disputes that traditionally revolved around children, experts say.

And courts are being forced to re-examine laws that often date back more
than a century, to a time when animals were regarded as mere property.
