Felines killed in fire at circus
The show did go on. Unfortunately, the lives of at least 10 cats and one
bobcat did not.
A fire started Sunday in a travel trailer that was parked inside the Spokane
Veterans Arena for the El Katif Shrine Circus, killing at least 11 felines,
according to Spokane Battalion Chief Steve Sabo.
As firefighters tried to douse the heavy smoke coming from the west end of
the arena, another small bobcat dashed through the legs of a firefighter in
a successful attempt to escape the smoke, S
abo said.
"It appears that these animals weren't involved in the actual show itself,"
Sabo said. "The owners appear to be subcontractors who provide their animals
if the circus needs them."
Though investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire that
started just before 3 p.m., Sabo said the fire started in the area near a
clothes dryer.
A security worker at the arena was treated and released for smoke
inhalation, as was another circus employee, Sabo said.
