Call for Action: Ask Club Veg to Support Alaska Tourism Boycott
In March 2003, Friends of Animals ("FoA") publicly promised a tourism
boycott of Alaska if Alaska's Gov. Murkowski implemented the aerial
wolf-shooting scheme approved by the state Board of Game.
On 27 December 2003, after Alaska issued permits for aerial wolf-shooting,
FoA's tourism boycott became official. The advertisement "Footprints of
Death in Alaska -- Boycott Alaska" appeared in USA Today on 24 December
2003. More than 150 "Howl-Ins" in support of wolves have been widely
publicized throughout North America. More than 100 organizations, from
Native American groups to dismayed schoolchildren, have joined the boycott
of Alaska until the killing stops.
Club Veg, a non-profit organization, rightly promotes the health benefits
of
a vegetarian diet. Yet the group's leader have subverted the tourism
boycott by encouraging their members to spend thousands of dollars to
travel
to Alaska during the week of 14-22 August 2004. The trip is promoted in a
newsletter and on their Web site at www.clubveg.org .
Friends of Animals urged Club Veg to respect the boycott, which remains in
effect until the state of Alaska ends its aerial-gunning of wolves. Club
Veg members are allowed to cancel their reservations in writing 90 days
prior to the 14 August start date of the trip. The Murkowski
adminstration
is hoping that tourists will still spend money in Alaska so they will not
have to give in to pressure. Please contact Club Veg and ask them to
cancel the trip to Alaska for so long as wolves are being killed.
