TEST 'LEFT SHEEP IN AGONY'

      Apr 24 2004

A FLOCK of sheep suffered 'horrific' pain during secret experiments at a Scottish university, it was claimed yesterday.

Furious animal rights campaigners are planning a mass protest in Glasgow after details emerged of a study into the effects of pain.

They claim 36 sheep had lethal chemicals injected into their spinal cords at Glasgow University to deliberately increase inflammation and sensitivity to pain. After the tests, the animals were destroyed.

The study, at the Institute of Comparative Medicine, caused the sheep to vomit and collapse in agony, according to the National Anti-Vivisection Society.

Details were allegedly recorded in a scientific journal obtained by NAVS.

Chief executive Jan Creamer said: 'This is truly shocking. Leaving animals in agony for prolonged periods for any so-called research is totally indefensible.'

A spokeswoman for Glasgow University refused to reveal test details but said: 'Painful torture and death of animals would not be allowed to happen.'
