MONROVIA -- The historic Upton Sinclair house was spray-painted with slurs
such as "puppy killer' and "murderer' early Wednesday, then visited that
night by protesters carrying signs and chanting animal-rights slogans into
a bullhorn.
The incidents involved radical animal-rights activists who were singling
out homeowner Mitchell Lardner because he is an executive with a company
called Sumitomo Corporation of America, which has ties to a company that
conducts tests on animals, protesters claim.

Members of the Animal Liberation Front are suspected in the vandalism that
took place between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 6:40 a.m. Wednesday at the home,
located in the 400 block of North Myrtle Avenue, authorities said.
