Sheep Shuffle

Jordan and Kuwait are purchasing more Australian sheep as Saudi
Arabia cuts imports.

Australian live sheep exports again felt the pressure of tight
domestic supplies, restrictions on exports to Saudi Arabia and the
Australian dollar strengthening against the US dollar, according to
Meat and Livestock Australia. Australia exported 325,915 sheep in
February, 10 percent above February 2002 levels (296,303 sheep), due
mainly to the record shipments in January 2002 (949,991 sheep), which
subsequently reduced the requirement for sheep a month later. ....

. Two organizations you'd never think would get in bed together: People for
the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the National Rifle Association. But
PETA's ever-imaginative president, Ingrid Newkirk, sent a letter Friday to
NRA President Kayne Robinson, asking for the organization's help in training
seal-killers in Canada to use rifles instead of the traditional method,
bludgeoning: "In this age of sophisticated weaponry, many are still crudely
killed with primitive cudgels. . . . Won't you stand with us in seeking a
quick kill?" NRA officials did not return our calls yesterday.
