Dewey, OK: A Dewey man has waived his preliminary hearing on animal cruelty
charges in connection with the discovery of a starving dog and 86 chickens at
his home.
Kevin Walter Gray is charged with two counts of animal cruelty and an
unrelated charge of false declaration of ownership. He will return to court in June
for formal arraignment before District Judge Jan Dreiling.
Police began an investigation after receiving a report July 22 that a
starving dog was at a home occupied by Gray and Amanda Jean Jantzen.
Authorities found a 3-month-old Great Pyrenees puppy, which should have
weighed about 40 pounds, that weighed only 10 pounds because it was starved.
The dog, which also had mange and a heavy flea infestation, had to be
euthanized.
Police also found at the residence 86 chickens living in a brooder meant to
house 50 chicks for only two weeks.
The cramped brooder contained adult chickens and baby chicks, along with five
dead chickens. Five more chickens died after being rescued from the brooder.
