A cockfighting ring was busted in Bernalillo County
over the weekend and now over twenty men have either
been cited or are being deported as a result.
Deputies arrived at a home on the 2300 block of Perry
Road in southwest Albuquerque to find the men gathered
around a dead rooster.  Thirty other roosters were
also found, along with weapons used in cockfighting.

While the state has no law against cock-fighting, it
is illegal in all New Mexico counties except Lea and
Cibola. 

Eleven of the men were in the county illegally and
have been deported. The other ten have been cited with
animal cruelty.

”We do receive occasional reports but it’s unusual to
find a location where they're having cockfights in
broad daylight and be able to cite people. (Usually)
they try to do this in secret,” says Bernalillo County
Sheriff spokesperson Michelle Arviso-Devlin.

Five of the roosters we so badly injured they had to
be euthanized. Animal control has possession of the
